This is Verizon we're talking about. They go out of their way to disable anything that would allow you to use music not purchased from them (like disabling the ability to copy music from the memory card to the phone on my V710, and since ringtones can only be used from internal memory, you have to buy their ringtones).
If it has mp3 capability, you can be sure it's hobbled in some way to make you buy more from them.
